Parenting Resources for Young Children in Greater Victoria

Ever heard of the organization Partnership in Learning and Advocacy for Young Children (PLAY) Victoria?

They are a one-stop-resource for information and support for early childhood development initiatives in Victoria. Visit their website to find resources on how to be a more effective advocate for children, and get connected with other early childhood development organizations in the community.

Help baby Molly and her family

baby Molly - please donateYou have likely heard about the sad news, that a family in our community has had their baby, Molly, diagnosed with leukemia.

KidsinVictoria.com

There are many great resources out there on the world wide web if you are searching for preschool information, but there is one local website that I found useful and fun:  kidsinvictoria.com.  It's Greater Victoria's local family resource for parents and kids. KIV offers a mom-driven community board, a local mom and child-related marketplace, community events, parenting articles, free classified ads, a photo contest, and our local mom blogs.

Google Family Safety Center

Google Family SafetyOur kids will sooner or later start using the internet to play games, find resources and maybe they are already Skyping with grandma & granddad. As a webmaster I know that the internet is full of scams, fraud, phishing traps and other potential harm so I put together this post as a start for a safer way of using the internet.

Google put together some advice on Safety Issues at http://www.google.com/familysafety/

Below you will find some issues that Google knows can often be concerning to parents. They work closely with a number of child safety organizations in the US. Included below is some advice from Google partners in the sections

An organization in Victoria BC that specializes in internet safety is Personal Protection Systems. We might invite them (Darren & Beth) again this year to a Parent Ed meeting.  They gave us some advice about Internet Safety and Digital Citizenship last year. They help to keep youth, adults, and families safer, while protecting their on-line digital footprint, when interacting in the cyber world.

Guiding Children's Behaviour

The Best ChanceI found an old print out of a free booklet to guiding children’s behaviour. It's still online so I thought I'd mention it. It describes basic principles and practices related to guiding children’s behaviour. It can serve as a foundation for interacting successfully with your children.

The guide promotes strategies and techniques that reinforce requirements in the Community Care Facility Act and Child Care Licensing Regulation. As described in the Child Care Licensing Regulation, licensed settings are required to have a written discipline policy.

This booklet provides an overview of the attitudes, knowledge and skills helpful to parents, caregivers, and professionals in their day-to-day relationships with children. It introduces two different strategies – prevention and intervention. It also offers a practical framework with concrete suggestions and examples.

Preschoolers and online games

Shaun the Sheep - Home Sheep Home gameLast year we had a guest speaker in the Parent Education session who talked about preschoolers and their use of computers. There are pros and cons of using a computer at a young age. The key is that computers can help with education through playing games, but - as with so many things - play in moderation!

At home we like to use the computer on rainy days to play online games such as Diego and Dora the Explorer adventures, Moshimonsters as well as PixieHollow. But one game that I would like to bring to your attention is "Home sheep home" by Aardman Animations at www.shaunthesheep.com.

The game challenges your preschooler to think ahead and solve an interactive puzzle in which sheep are the main characters. I played it with my kids (3 and 4yrs) and it was fun watching them trying to figure out how to help Shaun the Sheep and his two friends Shirley and Timmy get to the other side of the screen.

The Early Learning Framework

BC Early Learning Framework PDFBritish Columbia’s Early Learning Framework (PDF), is intended to guide and support early childhood educators, StrongStart BC facilitators, early years professionals, service providers, communities and governments in providing rich early learning experiences for children from birth to kindergarten. This document may also be of interest to parents / caregivers with young children.

Early learning refers to the emerging and expanding of young children’s physical, intellectual, emotional, social, and creative capacities. All children are born with a curiosity about themselves, other people, and the world around them, and in this sense are born learners. As they grow, they develop both their capacity and dispositions to learn through supportive relationships with their families, with other children and adults in their communities, and with their environments. Early learning is the foundation for lifelong learning, and the basis for individual, social, economic, and environmental well-being.

Miniature commandos: Why do young children play aggressive games?

Lego warriorsOne of the most frequently heard complaints among caregivers is that young children insist on playing super hero or fighting games. Around the age of four, a perfectly sweet and wonderful group of children can transform into a miniature commando unit, arms and legs flying as they challenge anyone and everyone wandering into their territory.
