Lansdowne Cooperative Preschool is a parent participation preschool
that has been in the Oaklands community for over 40 years.
We are currently recruiting three and four year olds and their families
to join our dynamic preschool.
Parents assist a qualified Early Childhood Educator (ECE) in
the classroom once every three to four weeks.
The direct involvement of parents within the preschool setting creates
a unique educational family experience.
Families who join Lansdowne Cooperative Preschool gain:
- Support in parenting and an opportunity to meet other parents
- The experience of assisting a professional ECE by actively participating
in the pre-school program
- Practical ideas for helping your child outside of school
- Access to experts on child development at parent education workshops
and regular preschool meetings
- Ongoing communication with the ECE
The preschool is administered and maintained by the parents on a non-profit basis,
which keeps preschool fees reasonable.
Children who attend Lansdowne Cooperative Preschool gain:
- The experience of having parent and child mutually sharing
and participating in the school's activities
- A safe, nurturing environment which encourages curiosity
and creativity with other children
- An opportunity to experiment physically and intellectually
in a place specifically designed and equipped for young children.
- A chance to develop as an individual and as a member of a group
- The benefits of a small group size of 15 to 18 children per class
with an ECE and two parents assisting.
Lansdowne Cooperative Preschool is licensed by the Community
Care Facility Act/Child Care Regulations. The preschool is
incorporated under the Provincial Societies Act. The Early Childhood
Educators are professionally qualified and licensed by
the Provincial Government.
The preschool is a member of the Vancouver Island Cooperative
Preschool Association (VICPA), which is the umbrella group for 14 preschools
from Victoria to Port Hardy. The VICPA and Lansdowne Cooperative
Preschool are members of the Parent Cooperative Preschools International
(PCPI), which is an international council, dedicated to the family and the
community. Contemporary practices and new ideas are communicated
to the preschool through these important associations.
